The author knows his subject well, and his interpretation is often clear yet nuanced. I especially like the fact that, given the vast scope of the book, the author still pays close attention to individual artists, and talks about both the techniques & styles and the content & social implication of the artworks.
The division of chapters is a bit too obvious and sometime not entirely appropriate. But it's still one of the best intro-level books on contemporary Chinese art printed in the US (or anywhere).
